Sitting at a Cafe in the City Again

by Kenneth Lau

I laugh in her face
As she rambles about moonlit memories
With a look of fond reflection
Upon her winter-flushed face
At how hopless she has become
Clinging to the outline of
Far-gone dreams.

What joy has the moon now?
As we bask in the warmth of a coffeehouse
Drinking ourselves to death with cocoa
It sings only lullabys
A mourner of ages
A scribe of epitaths
Relentless in its inquiries of our names.

These are not the eves we dreamt of!
Lost in woeful reminiscence
Afraid to make eye contact
And confirm the utter hopelessness of our co-dependant

But enough tears for cheerful yesterdays
They will do no more good than the cocoa
Which can take the ice out of our breaths
But does little to warm our souls.

Mmmm - you know, verse 1 could stand on its own as a poem with very little, if any change! Very haiku-like moment somehow, or perhaps mean very Zen?
