With a Nick by Kenneth Lau
There is a coffee mug of mine
One could call it a favorite
It's really quite ordinary, except
For one little nick
The twin blue stripes near the top
Complement the finished grayish white hue
That makes it a mug for any kitchen
But nothing sets it apart like that nick
Nothing says, I belong in your hand
The way that nick does on my coffeecup
So it's not pristine, and bears
No testament to travel
It's always sat right here on the same wooden shelf
At home, ready to be filled with warmth
but it's imperfection makes it personal
Call me sentimental, but the steam of coffee
Smells so much fuller
In a mug with a nick.

Posted by Rula Shin on 09/01/04 at 06:30 PM Ah yes!! I have that same mug in my very own kitchen! My personal nick on top where I always sip from and it says "My Heart Melts for Chocolate" - everything just seems to taste so much better when I drink out of it. Lovely poem! :-) |
Posted by Matt Forget on 09/03/04 at 03:36 PM Very intellectual. Everyone has something with a nick in it. It's like it's made to be yours and yours only. God help you if someone else touches it because they will lose a hand or something. LOL....I completely love this poem. Great work! :) |
