Chasing Prince Charming

by Mike Loftis

Once there was a maiden
who sat upon a log
To her surprise before her eyes
she spied a princely frog

“This must be the frog” she thought
“from the stories I’ve been told
If I catch and kiss him then
what wonder shall I behold?”

“I bet he is a handsome prince
enchanted by some witch”
But as the maiden fantasized
the frog hopped toward the ditch

“Oh no!” she cried “my handsome prince
you must not get away
I shall release you with my kiss
and we’ll be wed this day”

She set afoot to catch her frog
but with a sudden thud
the maiden tripped on hidden root
and landed in the mud

Her dress was torn her hair a mess
her face was all mud splattered
but she chased on her dignity gone
Her prince was all that mattered

At last she held him in her hand
Her princely frog was caught
but though she kissed and kissed and kissed
a prince her frog was not

Undaunted though the maiden was
determined to be a winner
and though she had not found her prince
she had frog legs for dinner

How fun, full of twists and a wonderful ending. Not for the frog of course!

It stinks of Roald Dahl, I love it! This stanza: “This must be the frog” she thought “from the stories I’ve been told If I catch and kiss him then what wonder shall I behold?” May work better as: "This must be the frog," she though "from stories I've been told If I catch him and I kiss him then shall wonder I behold?" The rhythm is so strong in all the other chunks, that one kind of threw me off. Lovely work, and welcome to Pathetic.

It's entertaining and funny, but beyond that it flows so nicely. Well done!

What can I say that hasn't already been said? Truly hilarious and deviously delightful ending.
