The Accumulation of Daylight

by Philippa Jane

I've seen your face before
(monotone, even monotonous)
beyond a brilliant skyline -
a contrast of muted silvers
- yet could never distinguish
the sugar from the sweet.

Alone another night, I drove
for hours toward a peach
horizon; swiftly tied my
insides out with twigs and
needles; pinned my heart to
flesh, numb beneath the
branding.

The sun still sets the same.

. . .

Hours in the making,
she tilts her radiant crown
in morning greeting,
peaking curiously over the
grand expanse of night.

And standing, on the brink
of Universal awakening,
we entwine our fingers
with air and fire, shake the earth
from our limbs and hardened souls,
dive towards the depths of unknowing,
and swim in our remembrance
of each other.

Flesh against flesh,
hearts stapled to our lapels,
like beating badges of honour;
beat/breathe/beat...

we always rise again.

Author's Note: A collaboration with the lovely Karen Michelle - I wrote the first half; she wrote the second part. Hopefully the first of many cowritten pieces.
