Free the Bird

by James Zealy

Free the bird,
Let her venture from the nest,
Yet she is afraid to fly,
Afraid she might not succeed,

Raise the gossamer wings of youth without fear,
Sing the song of independence,
Raise the voice to the highest,
So all can see the treasures we hold dear,

Make your gifts known to all,
Venture joyously from the safe haven,
Learn well,
Understand your true worth,
Fly gracefully like the heron to your destiny.

Author's Note: Written for my daughter when she graduated from highschool and was headed for a new adventure, going to college. She could not see what we could see in her, but I think she has begun realize her value as a human being.
