It Was Better to Leave Than Stay

by Amanda L Marron

waking up before the dawn
my labors begin while its dark
curing flying machines
of their latest maladies
usually the fault of an electric kind

standing on the flight line
doing a FOD walkdown with my squadron
as the red sun rises
over the airfield
it's hard to believe that i'm here

looking back at where i was
to where i am now
compared to last year
it's complete turnaround
i relish these oncoming days

Author's Note: FOD walk down= foreign object damage.....we pick up anything that could be potentially hazardous to our aircraft

its hard to believe that last year i was still at home and now i'm a full fledged working member of VS-31

I agree with Gabriel that the opening line to this poem is fantastic. Isn't it odd how fast life can change and how it FEELS like it's almost without notice though we've planned it ourselves? You're a brave woman :-)

Having been on many FOD walks in my day this one brings back many good (and some not so good) memories. The realization of your own growth is also well expressed here.
