your lips went flickering in the half- light

by Wendy Geal

the rain was pouring over crystaline air
in the exact sequence in which
your fingertips fell across me. my pulse went storming
louder than any thunder as
i saw your face in the half light flickering, lips mouthing lie- charms
i, you said, am the only thing more beautiful than the storm
stroking your hands through my hair the way the wind rocked through the trees
my pores- they moved and shook down my body like little leaves.
and I went gazing into your eyes
and believing your thunder though I begged the darkness to scratch you out .

Author's Note: sometimes you want to cover yourself up with darkness to protect youself from ever falling in love again.
