Absent Hearted

by Traci Mabats

My mom calls me on the phone
to tell me she's spent
the past thirty years
with a man who doesn't know her
So I start to look at you
with microscopic eye
because her words are
chewing on my brain
And you don't see
the holes in my soul
You don't hear the panic
in my erratic breathing
You don't see the way
I drift
from this
like I'm clinging
to a life boat
You have the indifference
of a shark
in the waters
And I'm afraid I'm sinking

Oh my, this is too close to home. But, Sharona, they are a different generation than us. I have to hope that makes a difference, that our generation of men are more willing to dig in. I love the way you described what your mother's revelation did to YOU. I've had similar experiences, and I don't think my mother even knows.
