I Fear Men

by Jennifer L Banks

The tightness in the chest began,
The muscles tightened, holding back all I can.
This feeling of bolting, from friendship or more
Here I go again, prone to slam the door.
::
I never know when meeting men,
What to do, where to begin.
What to say, where to stand,
This uncomfortable feeling, where will I land?
::
I make them nervous,
I’m too intense,
I should just run,
Does this make sense?
::
But I stand before them
The first time, uncertain
Looking for any sign or doubt
Ready to bolt and drop the curtain.
::
They make up their minds
She’s just fremd
Opinion formed,
judged,
condemned.
::
I fear men.
