Top of the World by Amy NiggelI had a bird's eye view of everything
and I thought I was invincible
nothing could touch me
no one could hurt me
I was safe and sound on the top of the world
I ducked to prevent falling when the sky got too close
and held on tight when the wind moved too fast
and I always knew my hold was tenuous at best
little fingers playing nervously with dark curly hair
little legs wrapped around a thick neck
begging to simply stay up there,
but you couldn't ever carry me very far
so I'd get down and walk beside you for a while
all the time wanting to be back on your shoulders
back on the top of the world. 08/08/2004 Author's Note: Thinking about being a kid and riding on my dad's shoulders through the fair and stuff, I always felt invincible up there.
