Remembering

by Amy Niggel

I always saw that smile in my dreams
and wanted that little red Toyota MR2 to come up my drive way
and you to carry me away like a knight in shining armor,
but you never came,
hell you never called till that last day of summer
the one day I wasn't home,
you didn't dry my tears
you didn't say you were sorry
you didn't say anything
the moment was gone before it came I guess
and we sat on the couch
while everyone else drank in the backyard
and we talked about everything else
but when it came to those words
someone finally walked in
and you were gone then
and I was left with words on my lips
that I would never speak
and a faint heartache over what never could have been.

Author's Note: Thinking about freshman year this morning and how different things could have turned out. Some moments I catch myself humming songs that I didn't ever know the words too, and listening to Dido and Elton John and laughing at the knowledge that it was in fact a blue towel, not green or white.
