Wilderness by Richard VinceThe waning moon seems so much
Further distant than it did
Those few nights ago, when you led me
By the hand through the streets
You have known so well, and that
Are completely new to me.
I lost all sense of direction until
The only bearing I had was
My left hand, guided by your right
Along confusing streets and
Unlit paths, past silent schools
And dormant shops.
All the time though, I knew
I could not be lost with
You to guide me, your peacefulness
Putting to sleep any doubts that
May awaken in my heart.
And now, as I enter an
Unrecognisable wilderness I once
Called home, I am separated from
Your comforting smile, and
Your hands that reassure me
That I didn't just dream you up.
And as the moon retreats under
A blanket of clouds, just as
It did that night, I must
Prepare for another lonely night,
Without the sound of your breathing
To interrupt the oppressive silence
Which now smothers me. 08/03/2004 Posted on 08/04/2004 Copyright © 2024 Richard Vince
