why all roads really lead to Rome

by Lauren Pearl

Every path seems to lead through darkness--
everything lit is only the moon reflecting
off shards of broken glass and jagged knives

Your voice guides me past scarring places
that leave calluses on my heart and hands
the thorny undergrowth reminds me just how

Masochistic I am and just how sadistic you are
my intuitions would turn this ground into quick-
sand, turning me away from this, from you--

This labyrinth of sharp turns and blind twists
I’ll never find my way out alive and I’m
afraid I’ve gone too far to turn back now…

Oh, what the hell,
you know I'll follow any road
that leads me to you.
