The Elastic Clause

by Matthew Zangen

We’ve learned to ride our instincts slowly
because they tend to smash into each other;
elastic collisions stretch fates apart
so we can split atoms when we come together
in the name of peace.

We all fall down
when our weights see us to the ends
of ropes that snap hope when you’re seeing for the last time
that maybe you’re better off using momentum to smash, split, stretch,
snap, and slip your way into something more comfortable.

Coffins are lined with pillows, may you rest in peace
until I save up the courage to buy my plot next to yours.

VERY provacative imagery. I agree that some of these lines could stand alone, but they do fit nicely here as well. Moving through life is not always smooth, even at its best.
