The Symbolism of Small Things

by Teri T Lahmon

Renegade hairs hiding behind my faucet
Too light
Too red
Too curly to be my own
Lingering scent in my bedsheets
Too musky
Too masculine
Too insidious to have seeped from my skin
Condoms discreetly stored in a stationary box
Left Over
Unused
Waiting for you to free them from confinement
and give them a reason to Be
Forgotten messages lying in wait for unsuspecting discovery
The towel last used carelessly
tossed into a corner
White silk stockings bought especially
For your perusal
At every turn in every space
Small reminders of our years
Abandoned to disuse.
