pearl

by Angela Thomas

summers are made for love.

i've spent most of mine longing
and pining over stupid men. i'm
sick of digging and trying and coming
up with only shells that someone
sucked the pearl out of a long time
ago. i'd much rather go hungry
than keep on making necklaces
and sucking what little salty brine
out that i can. i went to bed early
last night, sober, and i've woken
up easy, cuddled in pillows. it will
be this way, because this way, at
least there is no more acid making
my belly grumble, i'm not letting
my body produce it. my thirst
and my hunger is gone.
