broken

by Emily Sullivan

she told me she saw you the other day
you looked so frail, so weak
my heart sank, leaving me no words to say
your heart was broken before you learned to speak

i know we all have our demons
you have let yours drag you down
your happy memories are few and far between
how can we possibly save you now

i wish life was different for you
swimming in a life of love
not drowning in a drink
this world has not been kind, i know

i pray you set yourself free
and learn to fly

I don't know who this poem is about, but it really touched my heart with its compassion. I especially loved the last 2 stanzas, because they have significance in my life. Thank you, Emily, for a reminder of dying to one life and the beginning of a new life nearly 26 years ago.
