Love at First Sight by Mary Ellen Smith
*FIRST GLANCE
I believe in love at first sight because that first time I saw him
I knew that he was for me. There was finally and at last a face to
that dream so often dreamed, and my heart recognized him at once.
Of course there had to be that first "dance", that boy meets
girl thing, that "getting to know you" song...but I knew.
I was not his waitress that first glance of a night,
and when he left, he turned to look at me.
I glanced away shyly, and knew that he would be back.
I thought of him often those following days and two weeks later
there he was sitting in my section at one of my tables.
He had asked for me.
*MAY I TAKE YOUR ORDER?
My stomach did that funny little jumping, falling in love thing.
He ordered the prime rib, baked potato, salad with blu cheese
and a half carafe of house wine. We exchanged pleasant conversation
in little snippets as I worked my tables. I knew he wanted to ask me
out, but an hour went by, his meal was finished and it seemed he
would have to order dessert next or be going.
He had the cheesecake.
Another half hour passed and I lingered a little at a nearby
empty table, trying to give him more than a moving target.
A chance to say what I knew he was struggling to get out.
He finished his cheesecake and I noticed the way he held
his shoulders, it was body language that said,
“This is an uncomfortable moment." He beckoned me over.
*CUT TO THE CHASE
"May I have another carafe of wine please?"
To which I couldn't help but mercifully reply,
"A guy could get drunk waiting around to ask a girl out for a date."
