Hushed

by Angela Thomas

It was 12am when you finally
called me back. We were disconnected
by 12:35, I left two messages,
and you beeped me at 1:03,
you said that you were hungry
and I said that I had something
to feed you. You hung up ten
minutes later to eat sausages
and chicken, all protein, food
for a growing boy. You called
back at 1:25. We only talked
for an hour, me with my inuendo,
you, with your discovery channel,
when at 2:21 you whispered,
"I'll call you back and let you know
if I'm coming over or not."
I knew you wouldn't be in my arms
that night because you already
told me about 7 times that,
"I haven't made up my mind,"
that's boy talk for no. When
you did call back it was 3:35,
I was struggling to keep awake
and you said, "Not tonight,
I'm going to sleep." I replied,
"Of course, I knew that." You
came into my work today, me
being the tool that I am, I just
smiled and handed you your
food. You do like when I feed
you. You and your best friend
sat down at the farthest booth
from where I was standing
and when I came to talk,
you both hushed while you
hid behind your napkin.
