Don't Make a Sound

by Barbara Griffith

We used to have a promise. A pact from the second grade.
No girl would ever come between us, not one, not ever.
She makes me wonder if I could keep that promise.

"Best friends forever, and ever for more.
Girls, stay away from my best friends door."

I wished she would hold me in her arms for just a little longer,
I almost wanted to beg her in a whisper to stay. To just stay.
My mother used to sing me a song at night when I was younger,

"Little one your day will come, you're gonna find a girl who makes you smile.
Little one your life has just begun, you'll find a girl who makes you smile."
