I Like it Flavored Pink by Alison McKenzieThe air is heavy with lavender and sweet peas
I take it into me
The sweetness mingling with my spirit
Which is, of late, darkened by other experiences
In the distance
Gloom flavored clouds
Surround the horizon like moldy spun sugar
Looming there as if they might take us all hostage
Most summers here are scorching by now
But this year is surprisingly cool
The breeze races across my skin
Unsuccessfully laboring to scour away
The oppressive shadows that seem to cling
To every fiber of my being
The nearby creek,
Unusually swollen for the middle of June
Beckons to me
The Water dancing and singing
I inhale again, lingering in the gifted moment
Before I walk into the storm

Posted by Amanda J Cobb on 06/14/04 at 11:51 PM Huh. I wrote a poem recently with 'spun sugar' an image I chose for clouds. Crazy coincidence.
As to the poem as a whole, I think the imagery and flow of this are jsut as they should be - telling and lyrical. Well-done. |
Posted by James Zealy on 06/25/04 at 04:32 PM I like the picture of the cleansing nature of water and streams, and the fragrant smells of summer that help us put things in the past and prepare us for what lies ahead. |
Posted by Alastre Zidler on 07/15/04 at 08:05 PM Some great elemental imagery here, with the spun sugar clouds and the beckoning water. There is a strong sense of spirit in this piece, of affirmation. The title is provocative as well. I have a friend who always describes tomatoes as tasting pink, so I can't help but think of that! This is great work. |
