(lyric) i’d like to know {the river's edge}

by Richard Paez

(lyric) i’d like to know {the river's edge}

standing by the river’s edge
watching everything flow by
watching everything

and on the other side, across the blue
i see the childhood me and the childhood you
smiling and singing
looking forward, not to the side
like the me i have become—sideways and dry

where are you?
what happened?
are you looking forward now
like that long haired child
i knew so long ago?
are you smiling and singing?

standing here by the river’s edge
watching you flow by
flowing past me

and on the other side, across the blue
see the childhood me holding the childhood you
when we were happy
looking forward, not like me now
that’s become so sideways and dry

wondering about you
i’d just like to know
what happened
to that wide-eyed girl
i knew so long ago
always smiling and singing

this is destiny
time is your river, love, and i am capsized
all oars and no boat
but i still have eyes enough to see
across the blue
the childhood me, and just beyond,
the beautiful you

smiling and singing

I especially like the line about being all oars and no boat. To me it means all work, and no going with the flow.
