The Longest Day

by Brian Francis

The sun was dim in the eastern sky
when faith was put to its greatest test
A nation prayed upon their knees
For the soldiers they loved so far away
A narrow strip of sand and sod
Where hells gates opened to welcome them
In waves they crashed upon the beach
Freedom on the shores of France

They clung their grip was firm and sure
The Great Crusade was now begun
Freedom, christened with pools of blood
Unfailing strength, the gift of love
Up sheer cliffs the battle raged
The enemy’s hold was driven back
Liberty like a banshee screamed
Resolve and faith had won the task
