Down Below

by Trisha De Gracia

What a skeletal wreck I was poised on becoming.
We were translucent strangers
dancing through the lines of etiquette
and seeing only what was put before us.

The blood runs thick in both directions.
This pivotal moment in time craves solitude
and lonesome wanderings through what was once a garden-
now a wasteland.

Leaving you behind was never easy.
The people congregated in the dank bowels of an empty house
devoid of love and light
with fleeting memories hidden
dashes in the mirrors, singing songs of childhood days
and times where innocence made up for every short-coming.

The violent suckling taking place below these Earthly levels
made the atmosphere an empty shell
a deepened, hungry vacuum for
the weak and unassuming.
I explored your world
the girls all fat and anorexic
mirrors twisting shapes that don't exist
and boys that held them down
and make them swear to keep it secret
terrified that no mirages
held their saltwashed tears.

You brought an ultimatum with you
under cover in the shadows
showed a plan you had without your words
your lies or contradictions
it was "Stay.
Stay or leave but know
that no one will go with you
and there's always someone here."

I'm sorry that I left you
Down bellow.
