Jack and Jill (Variation 4) Sonnet

by Paganini Jones

THEME
Jack and Jill went up the hill
To fetch a pail of water.
Jack fell down and broke his crown
and Jill came tumbling after

VARIATION 4
Shall I compare thee to a running stream?
Thou art less pretty, elegant and damp!
And yet the glitter in thine eye delights
Much as the sparkle of the water lamps
My way to summits joy before I must
Return to earth and ordinary things.
The rippling chatter of the chilly rill
Just like your words refreshes thirsty limbs.

Could I unconstant leave your side to seek
Some other soul more lovely and more meek?
I could replace the water that I draw
With orange squash, with lager, milk and more
Yet even as I draw away, I fall.
I can’t deny the truth; you are my all.

Author's Note: Part of a series, though I cannot trace some of the other variations at the moment, and more are yet to be written.

I always thought there should be much more to Jack and Jill's story. You enrich it so romantically and artfully here. Very imaginative.
