Sprinkles On a Fall Day

by James Zealy

Sprinkles on a Fall Day

A small building,
Its rear entrance appealing,
The screen door slams,
Pungent coffee smells,
Dark and Inviting,
Regulars reading on old soft couches,
The daylight flashing,
Through the wide glass window,
Bakers behind the counter,
Open for all to see,
A pie fest beginning,
Children grinning,
The Proprietor praying,
For gray clouds delaying,
Damp drops falling,
Blue grass strings make musical wings,
A little boy dancing,
Children gathering round,
A wide smiling face,
Cookies to decorate,
Multi colored icing squeezed,
Candy sprinkles spraying like a fall breeze,
Eclipsing their treat,
Sugar coated grins,
Builds a memory to last,
Until it is a child’s distant past.

Author's Note: A small local bakery and coffee shop, where everything is made on site, has a piefest every October to showcase its wares, and entertain children with sometthing a little different.
