Last Causality

by Charles M Harrison

He was a man who fought in a war
Now he has returned to claim his life once more.
Although he has left the battlefields behind
He still fights each night in his mind.
In his dreams he relives the horrors of war.
The sights, sounds, blood and gore.
His pain runs deep, but we see not a scar,
For no on can see where his wounds are.
He longs for peace from his nightmarish dreams
Each night his mind shatters and once more he screams.
He sees once again friends who no longer live
Who gave for him all that they had to give.
At last in the very dark of his fright
A last causality brings an end to his fight.
In the night a shot rings out, then there is silence again.
His pain and his sorrow have come to an end.
He was a man who fought in a war,
He has come home, and he fights no more.
