Jolene, tonight

by Daniel Peterson

Jolene, tonight,
I'm wondering why
you've made me feel
something
for the very first time
in a very long while.
And I
wonder a bit
what you're really like inside,
you know,
somewhere behind
all the outward signs
that clutter up your pride
and do their best,
but fail to hide
that radiant beam of light
I remember so brightly
streaming
from the corner of your eye
in a pizza-shop-one-night story
I thought would end
in a simple
goodbye,
but instead won't leave,
is etched in my mind –
a smile, your lashes,
our music,
your laughter
and mine.
