Pastel Memories

by James Zealy

Perfect Images Captured for eternity,
Framed with dreams of perfection,
Colored by reality,
Come closer to fruition
Or fall as victims of attrition,
The mental Images are jaded over time,
Yet the portraits never fade,

Hope still exists,
As the memories conflict with the perfect likeness
That spark ongoing comparisons,
Controversies and conflict at war with perceptions,
Fighting feelings of despair,

The battle rages inside,
Churning like a whirlwind,
That seems to have no end,
An ongoing test of the hearts resilience,
Measured by orders of three,

Like a roulette wheel spinning,
Waiting for the number to come up,
We pause patiently praying for a win,
Each turn an event,
Until our heart is spent,
Then we try again.

Author's Note: Many of you are a little young to have families, but when you do it is inevitable that pictures of them wind up everywhere. I have 3. There pictures are frozen in time at 3 years old in Pastel portraits hanging behind our couch. At that point, they are the picture of perfection. It is an image no matter what happens, that I keep in my mind even when things are at their worst. It is what as a parent gives me hope. There is always a chance.
