Morning Bus Villanelle

by Maureen Glaude

she’ll be glad when this day is done
the woman on the morning bus to work
another day, another dollar comes

her novel in her lap, eyes closed from
the crowd of civil servants and store clerks
she’ll be glad when this day is done

morning dragging her with everyone
risen from their slumber, for what lurks
another day, another dollar comes

she leaves home in darkness, returns past sun
for an office run by directorial jerks
she’ll be glad when this day is done

her mind on remote for her stop to come
she knows the bus route by each twist and jerk
another day, another dollar comes

she rings the bell and forces her way out
through the standing army as they lurk
she’ll be glad when this day is done
another day, another dollar comes

The repetition is very powerful in this piece. This poem reflects my utter disdain for what society has become. A great race in search of another dollar.
