(movement two) what i said vs what you heard

by Lauren Pearl

many canyons have recieved the brunt of my dispair,
they play my words on repeat, slowly losing voice and meaning
with each echoing rebound from one wall to the next.
they listen though, with open ears and open arms-
although sometimes even that is expecting too much.

i do not miss those nights and early morning talks,
the weary-eyed, slurred-word discussions parallel to the moon.
it seems to have all passed peacefully in the crease of nightfall
as we sleep off the nightmares that plague us in the daytime.

i have never been able to escape this life of telephone
from elementary games to the reality of today-
it haunts me, creeping from the corners of your mouth,
slipping like regret off the tip of your tongue,
falling helplessly on the floor, only to lay idly for days

or years, perhaps;

depending on just how quickly you can call that clean-up crew to tidy up your mess.
