your striped sweater and the coldest day in may.

by Lauren Pearl

the weather man predicts a cloudless
night, perfect for staring at the stars
although i think he forgot to inform us
that the stars aren’t strong enough to
shine anymore.

apparently, they’re old and tired, worn
out from underappreciation, bored
with who they are and what they’ve
got; so they’ve packed up their bags
and moved on and let me tell you,
they are not coming back.

which reminds me, not coincidentally,
of you

and the fact that your eyes always
reflected the stars

and that even you seem to have
disappeared

at least to me.

and i’m not surprised, really,
because the weatherman predicted
that as well

“looks like tonight’s going to be
a chilly one, folks, with near freezing
gusts in the southwest direction.”
