To Our Soldier Fighting

by Meredith C Hartwell

for T

He died today.
I'm sure your mother told you.
Your strong shoulders will be missed --
some other man will carry him.

You fight
for his respect
and to be more like him.

Our grandfather died today.
His final lesson
was surrender.

Where you go,
your baby brother follows.
May true heroes never die.

Author's Note: My cousin is in Iraq, and was not able to come home for our grandfather's funeral. I am far too close to this subject, and this poem needs a great deal of revision. Any feedback would be appreciated.

it's tender and beautiful and makes one cry. Without the author's note, I wasn't sure of who was being addressed, but you covered it in there. Two important males enduring turnpoints in life.
