Burning Ceremony

by Jayme L Helmick

I lay him at your altar, Lord
and leave him at your feet
I've cried my tears and shed my blood
so now we merry meet
I tried to put him in your place
and walked away in pain
I tried to make him all for me
and nothing has been gained
I felt the breath of true love's kiss
and thought he was my One
But true love's kiss became decay
so now I'm left with none
Except for you, Lord, always true
and always standing near
I'll shed the cloak of lies and hate
with nothing left to fear
You alone have been my Groom
broken for me to see
You've beckoned, watched and waited
and your courtship is for me
So I lay him at your altar, Lord
and leave him at your feet
God bless my Love
and tend to him,
Your Grace, and
Blessed Be.

Author's Note: I literally left this on the altar at church. I told Pastor Raymond afterwards that this was what I needed to let go of, and he could keep it or throw it away but that I wasn't touching it. After I kissed the slip of paper and left it on the step, I fell into a pit of desperate grieving. I hope that someday I can look back on my love with Jonathan Mathis and not feel pain or remorse.
