the awakening

by Wendy Geal

i would die for the silence to end
yesterday this stillness was
the pearl white cloud my soul made its heaven
then black and white collided and i became dark
as night
now all is chaos, more lovely than ever,
your eyes, drawing like corsets, closer and
summoning the death of me
sand is falling sweetly through its little hourglass shell
and this life in me, newly birthed,
shall exist only with your sweet voice
awakening each sin

First I have to say I LOVE this line, “your eyes, drawing like corsets, closer and summoning the death of me” – oh man that’s good…what a dark and brooding image, and somehow, I sense a bitter longing there…in any case this whole poem is just brilliant I think. To me this speaks of the dying of one self and the birth of another, “yesterday…stillness was…heaven then black and white collided and I became dark,” but interestingly enough this new ‘chaos’ is “more lovely than ever”! The depth of awareness is immense in this moving scene of death and life… the end leads me to believe that this new self drawn out by the ‘sweet voice’ is not necessarily the INTENDING self as there is an association with “sin” as that which is ‘awakened.’ And the ‘chaotic’ essense of this new self brings a certain excitement…I see a deep DARK lust between the lines of this poem. Well, hope I didn’t butcher your meaning too much hahaha great poem! :-)
