I have to believe

by Amy Niggel

You tell me I'm wrong
because I can't see Him
because I can't touch Him
and prove to you that He is there.
You tell me I can't hold faith
because that's not how I was raised,
I was raised better than that
to be smarter than that.
You tell me I'm an athiest at heart
and it will come back to me
and I'll learn I was wrong
and I've wasted my time.
You tell me that I'll learn one day
that the Bible is just a story
and communion is just a cracker and bad wine
and that the saints were just insane
and martyrs died for nothing.
You tell me that I am not who I think I am
becuase you know me
and you knew me.
And you expect me to fall on my knees
and beg your forgiveness
for my transgressions against common sense.
I do not pray to you.
And you get so upset
when I don't rise to the bait,
when I smile and tell you you're entitled to your opinion
as for me,
I've seen this world,
through bioculars,
through microscopes,
and I tell you
all I've seen testifies
that I have to believe.
