Missing a Friend

by Amy Niggel

Because all it ever took
was a smile and a hug
to make everything be all right again.
Because you knew better than to ask,
and yet always had great timing.
Because you're lines don't meet
and you're the only one I've met.
Because I know you'd drop everything
if I ever asked you to.
Because you saw me through a time
when no one else was here.
Because you gave me hope
and let me believe.
Because you told me I was beautiful
and so much more than I thought I was.
Because you believed in everything you said
and knew it was true to you.
Because you always smelled so good
and your cologne lingered on my clothes.
Because you owe me a shirt,
and still have one of mine.
Because you always make it a point
to see me first.
Because you always made it a point
to put me first.
We never were more than friends,
and never will be,
we've both moved on so far from where we were in life,
but you'll always be the one I miss,
the one that got away,
that I got away from.
