Sand & Heather

by Karen Michelle

I see you,
with your sullen sulk,
peering out beneath
the fringe of
your constructed
maturity -
an elitist tint
and defection
to snobbery.

And I wonder
if you poured yourself
like sand into
these ill-fitting shoes
or simply survived
the winter of insignificance
and self-deprecation

to
blossom
into

the feminine rival
of a doubting Thomas -
questioning the truth
in my chest cavity
and sincerity in
my song.
