Broken

by Jersey D Gibson

I kept your photograph,
because it served me so well.
Letters sent by UPS,
how did they find me in hell?

I wanted you to know,
your smile meant everything.
I wanted to hold you high,
but I left our perfect dream.

Nothing left but memories,
what was life like back then?
Now I'm in this war of elephants,
it's always the grass that loses.

I've come back, 2 and 20 later,
my back was upon the streacher.
Patched up this broken doll,
before they tossed him back in.

Do you see my photograph now?
Sits next to a folded flag.
It was my time, and I fought well,
bullets to bruises, sleeping forever.

Now that your heart has healed,
my picture is covered with dust.
Do you remember my smiling face,
or has your memories gone to rust?

Here I sleep, so far away,
the rose you dropped still with me.
You lived your raging life,
while I stayed here, peacefully.
