three days (or is it four?) and i'm drawing blood

by Lauren Pearl

your name is candy on my lips
red and rouged and slippery
i can never tell if i say it
too much, or not enough, but
the sweetest sound since slicing
bread rolls off the tongue
and to my ears so softly
that it almost hurts the
deafening silence.

i never thought this would be me-
the addict that cannot go three
days without her favorite drug,
the one who suffers withdrawl after
five hours, but here you are,
millions of minutes away and more
miles than i can count

i cannot say your name tonight
without biting my tongue
and drawing blood.

i miss you more than i will admit
but these missing taste buds
bare witness to more truth than
my words (and my heart) can handle.
