Her Soul

by Richard Vince

Her soul, like a black hole
Drags me ever closer
To her eyes, so deep
And yet so shallow
To stop anyone from
Getting too close to

Her soul, the dying embers
Of a forgotten fire
Left to fend for itself
To stay alive through
Wind and rain and carelessness
To hurt the fragile –

Her soul, the suffocation
The walls around her heart
Deceased, impervious
Created by

Her soul, the firefly
Living in a cage, not living
Trying to spread its wings
But nowhere to fly to
Except inside

Her soul, the wall kept secret
Behind the sad eyes
And frowning face
Lives an endangered species:

Her soul.
