If I hold on

by Amy Niggel

If I hold on
just a little bit tighter
maybe you won't leave,
maybe I won't give you up.
If I can kiss you
just a little bit longer
maybe this won't end,
maybe we won't say goodbye.
We started this with the word already on our lips
yet it never gets easier to say.
Maybe if I hold on
just a little bit tighter
the world will stay at bay
and we can be us
just a little bit longer.
But the clock moves forward
and we have to part again,
and I can't help wondering
if you know how much this is killing me
and if it hurts you too.
and I can't help waiting,
though I know its a crime,
for days I don't know of
and may never in fact come.
And I try to be brave
and fight back tears
but they get through anyway,
and you tell me it will be all right
and we kiss
just a little bit longer
and I hold on
just a little bit tighter
because I know no matter what happens,
I'll never let go.
