remembrance of the day

by Amy Niggel

Where did the time go
slipping and sliding past
each day a pebble
slickly covered in algae
allowing times waters to flow over unnoticed
Never a day touched me
never a moment left a print
till I found that one rock
that hadn't been worn smooth
that no life could cling to
time got caught up that day
it snagged and tore
it shredded itself for the event
and I too felt myself tear apart
in that one moment
I had a dawning
of all those smooth days I'd passed
never relishing their touch
never holding them in my hand
as I clung to the pieces of that jagged edge
I cursed it for slowing my progress
for causing me pain
and making me bear witness to the days I'd wasted
it would take a thousand more smooth stones
and one final snag
before I would bless that same rock
for slowing my progress.
