Butterfly: If You Ever Pause

by J. P. Davies

If you ever pause,
to regard those on the ground,
would you think back
to when the wind first
touched your wings?

Did your flight go on
as planned? Did you stop
to think before you launched?
When you extricated, evacuated,
and found solace in the sky,
did you ever think back
to your beginnings?

How once you crawled,
worshipped the ground,
and escaped all notice.
How one day you slept,
and upon awakening discovered
appendages which would take you
and make you beautiful, fragile.
The most delicate, but strong,
example of rising above,
your former imaginings.

Now upon the air you encounter,
meeting others, who share
your earthly beginnings.
And you stoop low and grasp
teaching them how to fly.

[Begin to understand,
that you taught me flight
by example. But now here
on the ground without you,
I must take the first step
and stretch my wings for the sky.]
