Rain Mingled with Tears Forms a River from the Soul

by Alison McKenzie

It’s raining again.
I hear the droplets hitting the new metal roof outside.
It was supposed to keep the guts of our life warm and safe,
But the roof leaks and
Everything inside is deteriorating.

The thunder crashes
Only inches from the threshold
We stumbled over those long years past;
Shaking the walls
That were supposed to hold family portraits
That shatter instead
As the last thing you threw at me crashes into them.

The lightning briefly illuminates
The nooks and crannies
That contain our darkest secrets -
Horrors I cannot speak to anyone about.
It flashes again,
And in the mirror I see the grotesque reflection
Of the latest bruise
And swollen lips.

You’ve gone for the moment,
Driven away in the rage I can no longer absorb,
And I begin to cry -
Softly -
For it is the only tender moment of the evening.
The storm outside continues to pour in,
And the rain mingled with tears forms a river from the soul
Our life together
Washes out the doorway
And eventually evaporates,
Becoming the rain once again
Hitting the new metal roof outside…

Author's Note: This was my contest entry for the January 30-something circle. The title was one of the subject/line choices and had to be used in the poem.

Poignant... this still grips me by the heart strings every time I read it.

"guts of our life" - i truly enjoyed this piece, even though it was sad and depressing. It was so well written, and a very creative use of words in the story. Not at all cliche and boring. Bravo!
