what used to be never really was by Lauren PearlI remember: dancing in the gentle
glow of the street lights.
Whispering secrets to the
lamp posts and giggling as
the clock struck twelve.
Drawing pink hearts on the sidewalk
while inscribing inside them
names that were not quite
our own.
But I watched the rain
wash away our vows.
You laughed at my
foolishness. Placed chalk in
my hand and together
we drew a new
heart.
This time, the heart
was blue.
The rain never came to wash away
our heart. But time passed and
soon it was gone. Vanished like
the forevers we used to
comfort ourselves with.
The blue sky found in your eyes
had drawn clouds of grey. The
promises in them were
nebulous.
Your eyes cleared as the street-
lights brightened. But they were
different. In them I saw vast meadows
of parched nothingness. Oceans filled
with subtle emptiness.
And I cried
alone
where we once danced
together.
The luminescence of the street-
lights jeers at my broken-
heart. Dancing happily
on tear-soaked
sidewalks.
The remainings of us hide
in the soft yellow light outside
my house. Only the man-in-the-
moon knows our
story.
But don't worry. Even he
has been sworn to
secrecy. 02/24/2004 Posted on 02/25/2004 Copyright © 2026 Lauren Pearl
