cafe au lait jealousy

by Mainon A Schwartz

mmm...maaaarvelous,
she said, throwing jazz-
sequined arms in the air.
oh darling, you glow
like you just dipped your face
in warm chocolate
and couldn't be happier

you were meant to be always
smiling and brown.

i never loathed vanilla before,
had never minded that i
was covered in cold pale bean,

was destined to languish
in a cardboard box
on a freezer shelf

but ohhhhh how cheerful
i would be, in a coffee can,
dark and flavorful

ready to be roasted,
simmered,
and drunk
in happy, oblivious bliss.
