skin

by Melinda Sordino

i had a dream last night
wherein i traced my veins,
and you cried out in surprise
at the oceans that covered
the land, and when the red sea
washed over us we became
so clean again.

i always knew it was there
waiting to be free, just
waiting to make us clean.
i saw the world, cleansed
in my blood, as i
continued to trace
the patterns of my skin.

you worried of my death,
crying out to me
as i silently pulled away
the disguise that you could see:

the skin that covered me.
