My Evolution: Act I

by Kimberly Bare

I arrived
in this city with
a head full of dreams
and not a single plan.

Lost, but not lonely.

Overwhelmed by the
wealth of resources
at my disposal.

Pushed to grasp the
impossibilities,
I ventured
into the fray
with bouyant hopes
yet little courage.

Shy and frightened
of unknown territories,
yet intrigued as well
of my own potential.

And so I have
tested my own limits.

Strived to excel at being myself.

In this city
I have been calloused
and crushed,
but also delighted
at the depths of emotion
found as I have learned,
  and lived,
    and loved.

As I prepare to travel
from this place
I am struck with wonder
at the contrast between
the fearful girl that began
and the courageous lady
who is ready, even eager,
to venture forth once more
and seek out the next adventure.
