Art Appreciation

by Bruce W Niedt

In the Louvre, we walk

in awe of art

and stand before works

we were taught to revere,

unlikely icons, even

sculptures to irony:

Love without arms,

Victory with no head.

I really like this poem..."Love without arms, Victory with no head" - yes this is ironic art and these pieces "we were taught to revere" are deeply rooted in our minds as 'priceless' though we may not understand them. Yes, we walk the Louvre "in awe" though "unlikely icons" those sculptures are...and all of us straining to see the truth of their beauty...straining to understand though not always succeeding...Great poem! Hope I didn't go too far with the interpretation! haha :-)

This is great! I remember seeing the "Mona Lisa" at Le Louvre, surrounded by two busloads of Japanese tourists (still taking pics hehehe although it wasn't allowed, but that's beside the matter) I remember being greatly disappointed. I just couldn't understand why on earth so many thought that painting to be so magical. It's magic sure didn't put me under a spell. All I want to say is Art Appreciation is such a personal thing...there are no rules for it, or qualifications it can meet to make art great. It's all in the eye of the beholder and in the way a person is capable to be touched! Lovely poem Bruce.

I really like your skills at putting a lot into a little. In fact, three words says so much in this poem... "taught to revere". My sister is an artist and goes through these museums with eyes I'll never have
